The Wonder of Christmas
Christmas is a special season of joy and celebration that brings families together and reminds us of God’s incredible gift to humanity. In the hustle and bustle of holiday preparations, it’s easy to lose sight of the true meaning behind Christmas—the miraculous birth of Jesus Christ, who came to seek and save us.
These fifteen Bible verses provide a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the beauty and significance of Christmas. Whether you’re looking for verses to include in your Christmas cards, seeking personal encouragement, or wanting to share the Christmas story with loved ones, these passages capture the heart of this holy season.
Prophecies of the Messiah’s Birth
Isaiah 7:14
“Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.”
Written approximately 700 years before Christ’s birth, Isaiah’s prophecy foretold the miraculous virgin birth. The name “Immanuel” means “God with us”—a powerful reminder that in Jesus, God came to dwell among His people in human form.
Isaiah 9:6-7
“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.”
This beautiful prophecy reveals the divine nature and eternal kingdom of the coming Messiah. The four titles given to Jesus—Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace—speak to His complete authority and ability to meet our deepest needs.
Micah 5:2
“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.”
God chose the small town of Bethlehem as the birthplace for His Son. This prophecy reminds us that God often works through the humble and overlooked to accomplish His greatest purposes.
The Christmas Story Unfolds
Matthew 1:20-21
“But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, ‘Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.'”
Joseph’s experience reminds us that God’s plans often unfold in unexpected ways. The name Jesus (Yeshua) literally means “the Lord saves”—a perfect description of His mission on earth.
Luke 2:10-12
“But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.'”
The announcement to the shepherds reveals that Christ came for people from all walks of life, not just the wealthy or powerful. The “good news” (gospel) that brings “great joy” is available to everyone who receives it.
Luke 2:13-14
“Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.'”
The angels’ proclamation reveals heaven’s excitement at the birth of Jesus. Their message highlights two key outcomes of Christ’s coming: glory to God and peace for humanity.
Responses to the Christ Child
Luke 2:16-20
“So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.”
The shepherds model evangelism—after encountering Jesus, they couldn’t help but share the good news with others. Mary teaches us the value of quiet reflection, treasuring God’s works in our hearts. Both responses honor the Christ child in different but complementary ways.
Matthew 2:9-12
“After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.”
The wise men traveled great distances to worship Jesus and offer their valuable gifts. Their journey reminds us that encountering Christ is worth whatever effort it may require, and their gifts symbolize Christ’s royalty (gold), divinity (frankincense), and sacrificial death (myrrh).
The Deeper Meaning of Christmas
John 1:14
“The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
This profound verse reveals that Jesus is the eternal Word of God who took on human form. The phrase “made his dwelling” literally means “pitched his tent” among us—God coming close to His people, revealing both His glory and His grace.
John 3:16
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
Perhaps the most famous verse in Scripture, John 3:16 captures the heart of Christmas—God’s extraordinary love expressed through the gift of His Son. This gift offers eternal life to all who receive Him through faith.
Galatians 4:4-5
“But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship.”
Christmas happened at the perfect time in history—”the set time.” Jesus came not only to save us from sin but to adopt us into God’s family, transforming our identity and inheritance forever.
Philippians 2:5-7
“In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.”
The Christmas story is one of incredible humility. Jesus willingly set aside the privileges of deity to become human. His example challenges us to practice similar humility in our relationships with others.
James 1:17-18
“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created.”
This verse reminds us that Jesus is the ultimate “good and perfect gift” from our heavenly Father. Just as God gave His best gift to us at Christmas, we are inspired to generosity toward others.
